MANILA, Philippines – Chief of Cebu City Police Col. Gemma Vinluan has been relieved from her post amid the probe on the murder of Clarin, Misamis Occidental Mayor David Navarro.
In a statement Thursday, Central Visayas police director Brig. Gen. Valeriano de Leon said Vinluan was “administratively relieved” from her position on Wednesday to pave way for the probe of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
“I issued the administrative relief of Col. Vinluan to make her available [in] the investigation being conducted,” he said.
Vinluan’s relief comes after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the police to transfer its investigation on Navarro’s slay to the NBI, citing doubts over police involvement in the incident.
De Leon said the president’s directive to stop its investigation on the case is a “welcome development.”
“It will provide a perception of impartial investigation sparing us of suspicion of possible whitewash,” he said.
De Leon said pertinent documents relating to the case were already turned over to the NBI.
