MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday said it will launch an investigation into the riot at the Caloocan City Jail that led to the death of four persons deprived of liberty (PDL).
Citing an initial report from the Caloocan Police, the PNP said the riot, which occurred last January 10, erupted after a heated altercation among the PDLs engaged in a coin game locally known as Cara y Cruz.
Police said jailed guards on duty were able to pacify the warring groups but four lifeless bodies were found at the scene, while 30 others were injured.
The PNP identified the deceased PDLs as Hans Omar, Sherwin Perez, and John Patrick Chicko, and another whose identity is withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
“The police is further investigating this incident in coordination with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) because it involves multiple casualties,” PNP Chief General Dionardo Carlos said in a statement.
“The PNP will also look at the presence of various opposing gangs inside the jail facility that may have started the riot because those who died belong to different groups,” he added.
A random inspection has been ordered to determine if contrabands are existing inside the cells, the PNP said.
