More than P32 million worth of fake cigarettes were confiscated by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) during an operation in Balagtas, Bulacan, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday.
PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar said the operation was conducted on Sunday night in Barangay Borol.
The operation yielded the arrest of four suspects, identified as Zeng Qiangjian, 42; Lin Shanxiong, 48; John Bejay Agujar, 25; and Rodolfo Brosas, 25.
Seized from them were boxes of the following items containing 50 reams each:
- 27 cartons of Marlboro light cigarettes
- 6 cartons of Marlboro red cigarettes
- 41 cartons Marvel red cigarettes
- 26 cartons of Jackpot cigarettes
- 41 cartons of Union cigarettes
- 15 cartons of Cambo cigarettes
- 167 cartons of fortune blue cigarettes
- 49 cartons of Mighty green cigarettes
- 637 cartons of Two Moon cigarettes
- 95 cartons Fortune green cigarettes
- 244 cartons of D&B cigarettes
The PNP said the amount of confiscated fake cigarettes was estimated at P32,305,000.
Authorities also recovered one Isuzu elf truck, some boodle money and a P1,000 cash.
Police said the suspects will be facing charges for alleged violation of Art. 189 of the Revised Penal Code, Violation of R.A. 7394 (The Consumer Act of the Philippines), R.A. 8293 (Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines) and R.A. 1937 (An Act to Revise and Codify the Tariff and Custom Law of the Philippines).
“Patuloy ang mga iligal na gawain sa panahon ng pandemya and that is the reason we in the PNP are also not lowering our guard against them,” Eleazar said.
