MANILA, Philippines – The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) on Tuesday said it has identified the mastermind in the killing of National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) director Dr. Roland Cortez and his driver.
QCPD investigation head Major Elmer Monsalve said a ranking official of the NCMH and her bodyguard, also an employee of the center, were behind the double murder.
Monsalve said they were able to identify the suspects through interviews with NCMH personnel and witnesses’ statements.
“Actually, may mga testigos kaming hawak na talagang nakakita at nakarinig ng kanilang pinag-uusapan before the incident,” he said.
He added that the ranking NCMH official’s bodyguard served as one of the gunmen while another suspect, a certain George Serrano, provided the motorcycle that was used as a getaway vehicle.
Cortez and his driver Ernesto dela Cruz were found dead aboard their vehicle at the corner of Cassanova Drive and Tandang Sora Avenue in Quezon City last July 27.
Police investigation showed the two sustained gunshot wounds and that the assailants were riding a motorcycle.
The investigation also pointed to Cortez’s fight against corruption and the reforms he implemented in the NCMH as possible motive behind his death.
Also tagged in the killing were the owner of the getaway vehicle and three others.
