The family of PO3 Jeremiah de Villa of the Highway Patrol Group who allegedly committed suicide is asking for benefits but the Philippine National Police is yet to address this.
“We conduct investigation reports because we have what we call the line of duty committee board which determines if there are still benefits. They can benefit from the commutation of leave, and there will be discussions to determine other benefits the PNP can grant his family,” HPG Spokesperson, P/Supt. Elizabeth Velasquez said.
According to Velasquez, PO3 de Villa’s sister came to their office to ask for benefits.
De Villa’s sister also wrote a letter to them belying the late police officer’s character shown by the media and stood firm that he was innocent.
PO3 de Villa allegedly committed suicide when he jumped from the building of the Police Security and Protection Group on Saturday morning, August 27.
“They stand firm that their brother was innocent, and is a good sibling, loving husband, and good father to his three children,” Velasquez said.
For its part, the HPG is conducting a thorough investigation on the real cause of de Villa’s death.
“We are conducting an investigation report to determine the surrounding circumstances of PO3 de Villa’s death,” Velasquez told reporters.
The UNTV News and Rescue Team went to the PNP mortuary where the remains of PO3 de Villa are laid to get a statement from his family, but they refused.
De Villa and colleague, PO2 Jongie Manon-og, were charged with murder after fatally shooting motorist John Dela Riarte who allegedly went wild and grabbed a gun inside the police mobile on July 29, 2016.
